MonaLisa Touch Vaginal Laser Q & A

Is the MonaLisa is right for me?

Do you suffer from any of the following?

  • Vaginal dryness, burning, stinging
  • Painful sex
  • Urinary frequency and urgency
  • Recurrent vaginal infections
  • Recurrent urinary tract infections
  • Lichen sclerosus
  • Estrogen deficiency is a natural consequence of menopause, and is also caused by many treatments for breast cancer, endometriosis, endometrial (uterine) cancer and ovarian cancer. Estrogen deficiency causes many structural changes in the vagina, which in turn cause many of these symptoms. Lichen sclerosus is an autoimmune condition where the immune system attacks the vulva, causing intense inflammation, itching, scarring and pain.

Have you experienced changes in your vaginal or vulvar health since menopause, perimenopause, or medical treatments for hormonally sensitive cancers? Is your lichen sclerosus treatment not working?

It’s ok to talk about it, because now you can do something about it!!

MonaLisa Touch®: A Novel Laser Therapy for Vaginal and Vulvar Health

Patients are calling it “Life-Changing”

MonaLisa Touch delivers gentle laser energy to the vaginal wall tissue that stimulates a healing response by generating new collagen, elastin and vascularization. This results in new vaginal tissue formation with more moisture, more elasticity (stretchiness), more thickness, and more resistance to infections.

These changes result in SIGNIFICANTLY decreased sexual pain, decreased dryness, decreased stinging and burning, and improved sexual sensation.

A typical course of treatment is three procedures over 18 weeks.

  • In-office procedure
  • Requires no anesthesia
  • No downtime
  • Minimal side effects
  • Each treatment is less than 5 minutes
  • 20 Published Studies
  • Multiple Ongoing Studies
  • Thousands of women have been treated worldwide since 2012
  • Patients with lichen sclerosus will need 5 treatments over 30 weeks with topical (cream) anesthesia only
  • The MonaLisa Touch has been available in the United States since 2014, and in Europe since 2012. The underlying laser technology has been in medical use since 2000. Thousands of women around the world have undergone this procedure, which is quick, requires no anesthesia, and is now available to you! (Please note, because this technology is so new, there are no billing codes associated with it. Therefore, it is not covered by insurance.)
  • In both European and US clinical trials, women reported symptom relief after the very first treatment and even greater improvement after treatments 2 and 3.

How is MonaLisa Touch used?

The providers at Horizons Health & Wellness offer the MonaLisa Touch laser as an effective treatment for a number of conditions affecting women’s health. During menopause and/or breast cancer treatment, hormonal changes in your body weaken your vaginal tissue and cause atrophy and dryness in your vaginal canal resulting in painful sex, itching, and burning.

Your healthcare professional may recommend the treatment for a number of vulvovaginal symptoms, such as:

  • Vaginal atrophy
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Painful sex
  • Lichen sclerosus
  • Recurrent vaginal infections
  • Urinary frequency
  • Urinary urgency

Women sometimes suffer from urinary incontinence, or urine leakage with laughing, coughing and exercise. Women can also suffer from urinary urgency, or difficulty making it to the bathroom in time. MonaLisa Touch laser treatments can help strengthen the vaginal tissues and give you more control when your bladder fills. A careful medical and physical evaluation by healthcare professionals at Horizons Health and Wellness can tell you if the MonaLisa Touch laser treatment can help you with these urinary symptoms.

What is lichen sclerosus?

Lichen sclerosus is thought to be an autoimmune disorder that causes your immune system to attack the skin, oftentimes of the vulva (external genitals). As a result, you may experience intense inflammation, itching, and pain in the vulvar skin. The condition causes white spots or patches that may be smooth or wrinkled, and also can result in tissue loss and scarring.

Your medical provider may recommend MonaLisa Touch to treat vulvar lichen sclerosus.

What can I expect during a MonaLisa Touch treatment?

At Horizons Health & Wellness, the laser treatment is performed in the office. The procedure is painless and doesn’t require anesthesia beyond a numbing cream. The handheld laser device is gently inserted into your vagina and treats the vaginal wall tissue in less than five minutes.

Side effects with MonaLisa Touch are minimal, and you can expect to return to your normal activities immediately following the procedure.

You may experience noticeable results after your first treatment. Typically three treatments are recommended over a period of 18 weeks for vaginal atrophy, but your provider will suggest a treatment protocol to achieve optimal results for your situation. Patients with lichen sclerosus may benefit from additional treatment sessions.

Patient Testimonial:

“I have completed 3 treatments with the MonaLisa Touch Gynecologic laser. Originally, my issues were vaginal odor, urinary frequency, and urinary urgency. I would run to the bathroom every 2hours and only void small amounts of urine. The odor is now gone, and I can hold my urine for several hours now.

Dr. Aslami treated both my vagina and external lady parts with the MonaLisa. The vaginal treatments lasted less than 2 minutes, and I experienced less discomfort than having a routine pap smear.

The external treatments required a numbing cream to be applied at the beginning of the appointment. This cream took 20 minutes to take effect. The first external treatment lasted 2 minutes with minimal discomfort. On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being the worst pain of my life, I would rate this first treatment a level 3. The second and third external treatments had a discomfort level of less than 1 on a 10 point scale.

I left the office after all of these treatments feeling good and drove myself home.

Two hours after the first treatment, I experienced a burning sensation on my outer lady parts. This I would rate a 6 for pain. I first applied ice for 10 minutes and experienced zero relief from that. I next applied the numbing cream that Dr. Aslami had sent me home with, and it worked immediately…zero pain. I didn’t need anymore ice or creams after that.

After the 2nd treatment, I drove myself home and felt fine and didn’t experience any pain. I did not need to use any numbing cream at home.

After the 3rd treatment, I went shopping all day, and walked my dog 4 miles!

I had light spotting for 24 hours after each of the treatments, requiring nothing more than a few (3 or less) pantiliners.

Dr. Aslami made me feel very comfortable and safe by explaining everything in detail before and while she performed the procedure. I love her and highly recommend her for this procedure. “
