Uterine polyps are growths that can develop inside the lining of the uterus. Common symptoms associated with polyps include spotting, bleeding between periods, bleeding after sex, and cramping. While typically noncancerous, these growths can make us feel uncomfortable in the short term and may develop into more complicated concerns further down the line. If you find your periods heavier than before, it may be time to contact our team. At Horizons Health & Wellness, we can provide you with the diagnostic testing and treatments you need to feel better again.

What Causes Uterine Polyps?

Uterine polyps are sensitive to your estrogen levels and can grow when there is an overabundance of these hormones. These growths appear as estrogen levels rise and fall while your body undergoes its menstrual cycle. As estrogen increases, the lining of your uterus thickens. In some cases, this thickening can lead to the growth of an endometrial polyp, which can persist and become problematic. Identifying these kinds of growths can be difficult without the necessary imaging equipment.

What Are the Symptoms?

Dysfunctional uterine bleeding, cramping, miscarriage, and infertility are common symptoms associated with uterine polyps. These uterine growths are not particularly dangerous. If you have polyps and you’re unable to conceive, removal of these growths might allow you to become pregnant. Moreover, while most polyps are not cancerous, developing cancerous uterine polyps is possible over time.

Office Hysteroscopy for Uterine Polyps

At Horizons Health & Wellness, we provide diagnostic testing and office hysteroscopy treatments to identify and address uterine polyps. Our hysteroscopy procedure involves the use of a thin, lighted tube called a hysteroscope. During the treatment, this instrument is inserted into the vagina to examine the cervix and inside of the uterus. This method doubles as both a diagnostic and treatment tool. If a polyp is found on your uterus, it can be removed during your appointment via an operative hysteroscopy.
