Menopause Q & A

What is menopause?

Menopause officially begins when you haven’t had a menstrual period for at least 12 months. The time leading up to menopause is known as perimenopause, and a variety of symptoms may appear that interrupt your daily life.

These symptoms may include:

  • Missed or heavy periods
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Painful intercourse
  • Change in sex drive
  • Hot flashes or night sweats
  • Mood swings
  • Depression and anxiety

Many symptoms of menopause mimic other medical conditions. When you come in for an appointment, your provider reviews your symptoms and medical history to determine how to manage those symptoms effectively. Blood/saliva/urine tests may be recommended to analyze your hormone levels.

Your healthcare professional also watches for signs of other medical issues that frequently occur in perimenopause and menopause, including urinary tract infections and vaginal infections. Bone loss is also common due to the decrease in estrogen levels, and supplements or other treatments may help prevent or slow down bone loss.

What treatments are available for menopause symptoms?

You may experience a variety of symptoms -- some that are temporary, some that last for longer periods of time. If these symptoms are disrupting your life, one or more treatments may relieve discomfort and help you restore your quality of life.

The recommended treatments may include:

  • Hormone balancing via traditional hormones or bioidentical hormones
  • Nutritional guidance to improve your sense of well-being
  • Evidence-based vitamins and supplements to help mood, fatigue, sleep, brain fog and other common symptoms

Your provider may also recommend laser therapy treatments to improve vaginal symptoms, such as dryness and sexual pain.

What is MonaLisa Touch® laser therapy?

The MonaLisa Touch laser can be used to greatly enhance tissue quality and sensitivity in your vagina and vulva (external genitals). The technology uses gentle laser energy to stimulate a healing response that generates new collagen, elastin, and blood vessels in the vaginal wall and vulvar tissue. This treatment naturally increases vaginal lubrication, improves vaginal elasticity (stretchiness), and reduces susceptibility to urinary tract infections and vaginal yeast/bacterial infections. Sexual sensitivity of these tissues is also greatly improved after the MonaLisa laser treatment. In addition, women suffering from lichen sclerosus can see substantial improvements in genital scarring and pain.

MonaLisa Touch is a minimally-invasive procedure that requires no anesthesia and has minimal side effects. The five-minute treatment is completed in right in the office for your comfort.  Most women will require a total of 3 treatments every 6 weeks over 18 weeks, but your provider will recommend a customized treatment plan to achieve optimum results for you.
