Skin Resurfacing Q & A

What is skin resurfacing?

Skin resurfacing uses laser technology to remove layers of old skin. New skin cells develop as the laser treatment triggers the body’s natural healing response. As a result of the skin resurfacing treatment, your body produces new collagen and elastin, firming your skin and giving it a fresh, younger-looking appearance.*

At Horizons Health and Wellness, skin resurfacing is performed with the Icon™ Aesthetic System.

An Icon™ skin resurfacing treatment can take place in less than an hour. The technology combines intense pulsed light (IPL) and fractional laser energy on a targeted treatment area, customized for each patient's skin type and texture. In addition to skin resurfacing, the Icon™ is used for a wide variety of treatments, including:

  • Hair removal
  • Photorejuvenation
  • Stretch mark removal
  • Scar removal
  • Wrinkle reduction

What does skin resurfacing treat?

Skin resurfacing is an effective treatment for improving a number of skin-related conditions, including:

  • Wrinkles and fine lines
  • Age spots and brown spots
  • Sun damage
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Acne scars
  • Loose facial skin
  • Rosacea
  • Telangiectasias

Am I a good candidate for skin resurfacing?

Many men and women undergo skin resurfacing to refresh their facial skin, so coming in for an appointment is the best way to find out if you’re a good candidate. In your initial consultation, the condition of your skin is evaluated, and if you qualify, your provider develops a customized treatment plan to achieve your desired results.

Factors affecting the results of skin resurfacing treatments include skin type and tone, as well as any existing skin or medical conditions. You may be advised to stop taking certain medications and avoid smoking for several weeks prior to your treatment to promote effective healing.

What can I expect during and after a skin resurfacing procedure?

Skin resurfacing requires a local anesthetic at the treatment site to prevent discomfort. A handheld laser device is passed over the targeted area to treat skin in the desired areas. The procedure may take an hour or more, depending on the size of the treatment area.

As the new skin cells grow and your skin heals after a skin resurfacing treatment, you’ll begin to see noticeable results. Wrinkles and other minor skin imperfections often improve after the initial treatment. For more severe acne or surgical scars, you may need multiple treatments over the course of several months. Tighter skin, diminished wrinkles, enhanced skin texture, and more even skin tone are often evident several weeks after treatment.

Is there any downtime?

You may need as long as two weeks to fully heal from Icon™ skin resurfacing. Any downtime will depend on the type of treatment received. Following treatment, you may experience some common side effects, including swelling, redness, and irritation. For your comfort, follow the at-home instructions given by your provider after your treatment session. In most cases, these side effects resolve through your body’s natural healing processes.

Your provider will determine if you are a good candidate for Icon™ based on an individual skin assessment and your desired results.

*Individual results may vary.

Horizon’s Health and Wellness offers Nitronox! Nitronox is a delivery system that provides a gas mixture of 50% medical nitrous oxide and 50% medical oxygen and is used to help ease discomfort during some medical and aesthetic procedures. The gas mixture is a safe, self-administered by the patient through a mask or mouthpiece in which the patient inhales as needed. When it’s administered, patients are awake, responsive, and breathing on their own.

Once you stop inhaling the gas mixture it will be completely out of your system within 5-10 minutes. You will start feeling back to normal almost immediately. If you do not like how you feel during your self-administered application, you can stop and breathe room air, which should quickly reverse any negative effects. The effects of nitrous oxide are completely out of your system within a few minutes. Patients can safely drive home about 10 minutes after ceasing use of nitrous oxide and oxygen.
