Scar Removal Q & A

What causes scars?

A scar is a patch of skin that grows permanently over a wound. You may develop a scar as the result of:

  • Acne
  • Chickenpox
  • A cut or sore
  • A burn
  • Surgery
  • Infection
  • Skin conditions

Scars appear thicker, a little bit shiny, and a slightly different color than your normal skin -- often pink, red, or white. The appearance of your scars may depend on the size and depth of the wound, the location of the scar on your body, and how long the wound took to heal. Some people tend to develop scars more readily than others, which is an inherited trait.

In many cases, your scars fade over time, but may remain noticeable. If you’re unhappy with the appearance of acne scars on your face or body, or any other kind of scars, Horizons Health & Wellness offers treatment options to fade and eventually eliminate them.

What treatments are available for scars?

The providers at Horizons Health & Wellness offer the innovative Icon™ laser treatments to reduce the appearance of your scars. The Icon™ Aesthetic System is effective for all skin types and uses a fractional, non-ablative laser to treat a variety of scars.

The laser energy penetrates deep into the layers of your skin to stimulate your body’s natural healing response, which begins removing the damaged scar tissue. After each treatment session, your skin starts to produce new collagen that results in smoother skin with less noticeable scarring.

What can I expect during an Icon™ laser treatment?

Laser treatments with the Icon™ Aesthetic System are performed in the comfort of the Horizons Health & Wellness office. If you prefer, a topical numbing agent can be applied before the procedure begins. Some patients describe feeling a slight snapping sensation as the handheld laser device passes over the treatment area.

Following the treatment, you may experience some swelling or redness, but it should resolve in a few hours. You can return to your normal activities following treatment without any downtime.

Do I need more than one laser treatment?

Most likely. Your provider evaluates your scars and creates a customized treatment plan to effectively eliminate the appearance of your scars. You may need several treatment sessions over the course of several weeks to achieve your desired results. Factors that influence your course of treatment include the size, coloring, and thickness of the scars, as well as their locations.

Horizon’s Health and Wellness offers Nitronox! Nitronox is a delivery system that provides a gas mixture of 50% medical nitrous oxide and 50% medical oxygen and is used to help ease discomfort during some medical and aesthetic procedures. The gas mixture is a safe, self-administered by the patient through a mask or mouthpiece in which the patient inhales as needed. When it’s administered, patients are awake, responsive, and breathing on their own.

Once you stop inhaling the gas mixture it will be completely out of your system within 5-10 minutes. You will start feeling back to normal almost immediately. If you do not like how you feel during your self-administered application, you can stop and breathe room air, which should quickly reverse any negative effects. The effects of nitrous oxide are completely out of your system within a few minutes. Patients can safely drive home about 10 minutes after ceasing use of nitrous oxide and oxygen.
