A scar is the result of skin that has experienced trauma and not healed properly. Some skin scars, like those on the back or the side of your body, are often barely noticeable and typically easy to cover up. Others, in more visible locations like the face or neck, can be unsettling even if the scar is relatively small. While these skin marks often fade over time, certain scarring may linger and serve as a reminder of a previous injury or acne breakout. If you struggle with this issue and are in need of an aesthetic solution, our team at Horizons Health & Wellness can help.

What Causes Scars?

Scar tissue is created when your skin produces collagen faster than normal in order to heal wounds. Rather than healing cleanly, the affected area heals with a patch of thicker, less flexible skin that does not have quite the tone or texture of the surrounding area. Scars are common after surgeries, which require the surgeon to cut all the way through the skin, as well as in cases of serious acne. They may also develop after a fall or other type of injury that breaks the skin.

Types of Scars

Though they all come in different shapes and sizes, scars can be categories into several groups depending on their characteristics and causes.

  • Keloid – A response to aggressive healing, these scars often go beyond the initial injury and can even hamper movement. They are more common in darker-skinned individuals.
  • Hypertrophic – Red patches that are raised in texture but do not go beyond the initial injury like keloid scars.
  • Contracture – Burn scars that contract the skin where they appear.
  • Acne – “ice pick,” “boxcar,” and other raised or recessed bumps that form as a response to severe acne, especially acne that has been repeatedly scratched or picked at.

Signs of Scarring

It is generally easy to tell if you have a scar. Scarred areas tend to be discolored, rough, and distinct from other areas of your skin. Whether or not a scar forms and how quickly it heals is dependent on your skin type and the cause of the specific scar. While certain injuries can fade after a couple of weeks, others can linger for a lifetime.

Treatment for Scars

At Horizons Health & Wellness, we rely primarily on our ICON™ Skin Resurfacing system to help you restore the beauty of your skin. This treatment heals your body by using laser light to penetrate below the skin surface and initiate tissue remodeling. This results in skin tightening, smoothed out wrinkles, and renewed scar healing with minimal discomfort. After your treatment, your skin will gradually repair itself, and younger, healthier skin will replace the scarred areas. A series of 3-4 sessions are typically recommended to achieve the best results.
